Nike “All Together”

This is a spot called Nike “All Together”. Basketball greats , past and present celebrate Kobe Bryant’s quest for a fifth championship ring. I worked on this at a52 in Santa Monica, Ca. This image looks like crap, but sometimes that’s the point. Yeah I know, I’m a compositor and its my job to make beautiful images come to life. But, sometimes the beauty lies within the grit. This spot is great because of the old TVs and the reproduced look given to each shot to make you feel as if you are watching the commercial on an old TV. Just like if you were watching Kobe tear it up back then. You definitely get an emotional response from the classic tube look. Especially if you grew up watching TVs just like the ones in the spot.
The great thing about this commercial is that it looks so natural. The editing is superb of course, done by Angus Wall at Rock, Paper Scissors and that stands out first and foremost. But, what I am talking about is the enhancements done to the footage. The subtle grain and tube TV RGB patterns added that were added later in post.
My task, was to remove unwanted signs and sponsors that you would normally see within a stadium environment. This was done by tracking in clean still frames in Nuke and Combustion and transforming them to the geometry of the object I was “cleaning”. I then, roto’d and merged any object passing in front of the “clean” patches back over top. After that was done, I needed to reproduce any kind of color correction, artifacts, doubling, weird grain structures or anything a tube or old TV can spit onto an image. That was the fun part.
